Project description:
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic PhD student to join an interdisciplinary project “Optical analysis of products of electrochemical processes in picolitre volumes”.
The Institute of Physical Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland, is offering one position funded by the National Science Centre Poland, within the Project Opus NCN 2018/29/B/ST7/02552 in collaboration with the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics, Warsaw University of Technology .
The main objective of this project is to study the optical response to electrochemical reactions in picoliter volumes inside a microcavity inline Mach-Zehnder interferomenter (µIMZI) fabricated in an optical fiber. The idea is to investigate the effect of electrochemical reactions inside the cavity on the optical response of the interferometer. By combining electrochemical and optical information the goal is to obtain more information about the system than possible by any one method individually. The work will be performed by a consortium of the group at Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics, Warsaw University of Technology led by Prof. Mateusz Śmietana, the Charge Transfer Processes in Hydrodynamic Systems group at the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS led by Prof. Martin Jönsson-Niedziółka, and Prof. Marcin Koba from National Institute of Telecommunications.
Responsibilities
The present PhD project will concern performing electrochemical measurements in the microcavity interferometer. An important aspect of the work involves developing a system for filling and exchanging liquids in the cavity – initially using microinjectors, but eventually the system can hopefully be incorporated in a microfluidic setup. Also, the placement of the electrodes and its influence on the response of the system will need to be investigated. These aspects of the project will be initially be tested using calculations in e.g. Comsol or Ansys.
Requirements:
For this role, we seek motivated candidates with an interest in multidisciplinary work in optics and electrochemistry.
The candidate should have a masters degree (or equivalent) in either physics, chemistry or related areas. Familiarity with electrochemisty, microfluidics or fibre optics is a plus. Some experience with computer simulations would be desired.
- Good command of English is required (at least B2)
How to Apply:
- Application Deadline: 21th of June, 2019
- Send an application directly to rekrutacja@ichf.edu.pl; IMPORTANT: email title “Recruitment 044/2019”
- Additionally, to be eligible, applicants are required to submit simultaneously their application to the online recruitment system of Warszawska Szkoła Doktorska Nauk Ścisłych i BioMedycznych” [Warsaw Doctoral School “Warsaw-4-PhD” http://warsaw4phd.pl] between 4th and 21st of June 2019 (the link will be active at the beginning of June).
Questions regarding this position should be directed to the project leader: Martin Jönsson-Niedziółka.
The competition will be performed in accordance with the regulations of the Warsaw PhD School in Natural and BioMedical Sciences and will consist of two steps 1.) submission of documents and 2.) interview of selected candidates;
List of documents:
- Cover letter (maximum 3500 characters)
- A scan or a photocopy of the candidates MSc diploma
- transcript of grades from BSc and MSc
- Professional curriculum vitae with a list of scientific achievements (publications, patents, research projects, conference presentations, etc.).
- Documents confirming scientific achievements of the candidate.
- Consent regarding the collection and processing of personal data
- A letter of recommendation written by an independent researcher (at least a PhD holder) (an MSc supervisor etc.).
IMPORTANT: applications without the consent will not be considered
- Incomplete applications may be not considered;
We reserve the right to contact and reply only to selected candidates.
